A total of 56 Pakistani universities have secured places in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027 — but not a single one makes it into the global top 400. Quaid-i-Azam University remains Pakistan’s highest-ranked institution, placed in the 551–600 band, followed by the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in the 601–650 band and COMSATS University Islamabad in 651–700.

The results underline both the growing presence of Pakistani institutions on the global map and the persistent gap between them and the world’s leading universities, particularly in research output, academic reputation and international competitiveness.

  • 551–600: Quaid-i-Azam University (highest-ranked Pakistani institution)
  • 601–650: National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST)
  • 651–700: COMSATS University Islamabad

  • 801–1000: University of the Punjab, Air University, GCU Faisalabad, International Islamic University Islamabad, Gomal University and others
  • 1001–1200: LUMS, University of Peshawar, Riphah International University, Sukkur IBA University and others
  • 1201–1400: Bahria University, University of Sargodha, UET Lahore and others
  • 1401–1600: Institute of Space Technology, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Superior University and others
  • 1601–1800: University of Karachi, Dow University of Health Sciences, BUITEMS and others
  • 1801–2000 and beyond: Khyber Medical University, NED University of Engineering and Technology, and NUMS (placed beyond 2000)

The global picture: Oxford leads again

The University of Oxford retained the top position globally for the 11th consecutive year. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranks second, while Princeton University and Stanford University share third place. The University of Cambridge is fifth, Harvard University sixth, California Institute of Technology seventh and Imperial College London eighth, with UC Berkeley and Yale sharing ninth.

Asian institutions continued their climb. China’s Tsinghua University ranks 11th and Peking University 13th, with 17 Chinese universities now in the global top 200. Japan has five institutions in the top 200, led by the University of Tokyo at 27th. Malaysia’s University of Malaya entered the top 200 for the first time, securing joint 194th place.

Why no Pakistani university cracks the top 400

THE rankings weigh teaching, research environment, research quality, industry income and international outlook. Pakistani universities consistently lag in:

  • Research quality and citations — limited high-impact international publications
  • International outlook — few foreign students and faculty compared with global competitors
  • Industry income — weak university-industry linkages and lower research funding
  • Faculty resources — stretched student-teacher ratios in public-sector universities

What this means for Pakistani students

For students planning admissions, rankings are one signal among many. A university’s band position says little about the quality of a specific department or programme. Still, the data matters for those applying abroad: graduates of higher-ranked institutions often find it easier to win foreign scholarships, and research-focused students should check faculty publications and lab facilities rather than the overall band alone.
