Frequently Asked Questions

What is the wash sale rule?

A US tax rule (IRC Section 1091) that disallows claiming a capital loss if you buy a “substantially identical” security within 30 days before or after the sale at a loss.

What happens to the disallowed loss?

It is not lost forever — it is added to the cost basis of the replacement shares, which reduces your taxable gain (or increases loss) when you eventually sell those.

Does this apply to crypto?

Currently the wash sale rule applies to securities (stocks, bonds, options). As of 2026, crypto is generally treated as property and outside the rule — but legislation has been proposed, so verify current law.

Does this apply in Pakistan?

No. Pakistan’s tax law has no wash sale concept — NCCPL deducts CGT on every sale regardless of repurchases.
