How Zakat on Shares Works

The rule: If you hold shares for trading (buying/selling for profit), Zakat is due on the full market value of the shares at 2.5%. If held purely for long-term dividends, some scholars say Zakat applies only to the zakatable portion of company assets — consult a scholar for your case. This calculator uses the trading-intention method (market value).

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Zakat due on shares?

Zakat becomes due when your total zakatable assets have been held for one lunar year (hawl) and exceed the nisab threshold (value of 87.48g gold or 612.36g silver).

Do I pay Zakat on shares I just bought?

Zakat is calculated on what you own on your Zakat anniversary date (one lunar year after you first became sahib-e-nisab), valued at current market prices that day.

What about dividends received?

Cash dividends sitting in your account are part of your cash holdings and included in zakatable assets.

Should I deduct broker fees or CGT?

Zakat is on the gross market value of shares. Taxes and fees are not deducted from the zakatable amount in the standard calculation.
